Pursuing CIArb Membership: A Training Pathways Guide

Pursuing CIArb Membership: A Training Pathways Guide

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) is the world’s leading professional body for dispute resolution. Membership of CIArb provides internationally recognised credentials, access to professional networks, and opportunities for continuous development. This guide outlines the pathway to membership and beyond.

Membership Tiers

CIArb offers several tiers of membership, each reflecting a different level of expertise and commitment:

  • Associate (ACIArb): Entry-level membership demonstrating foundational knowledge of dispute resolution principles
  • Member (MCIArb): Intermediate level requiring demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in arbitration, mediation, or adjudication
  • Fellow (FCIArb): The highest tier, recognising significant experience, advanced expertise, and contributions to the field

Pathways to Membership

The most common pathway involves completing CIArb’s modular education programme:

  • Module 1: Law, Practice and Procedure of International Arbitration (or equivalent for domestic arbitration/ADR)
  • Module 2: Advanced arbitration practice, including writing awards and conducting proceedings
  • Module 3: International Arbitration Award Writing — the final assessed module for MCIArb

The Accelerated Route

Experienced practitioners may apply through the Accelerated Route to Membership, which recognises prior professional experience in dispute resolution. Applicants must demonstrate substantial practical experience through a portfolio of case involvement and professional references.

Fellowship Pathway

Fellowship (FCIArb) requires demonstrated excellence. Candidates must hold MCIArb status and demonstrate significant experience as an arbitrator, mediator, or dispute resolution professional. The assessment involves a written application, interview, and review of the candidate’s professional portfolio.

Benefits of CIArb Membership

  • Internationally recognised professional credential
  • Access to CIArb’s global network of dispute resolution professionals
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities
  • Eligibility for CIArb panel appointments
  • Access to publications, research, and professional resources
  • Use of post-nominal letters (ACIArb, MCIArb, FCIArb)
